Beyond the Sands Live event Done but… May 1, 2009

man it was a chore.  Probably the hardest thing about gaming on the server that I do is the population imbalance.  If the cencus data is accurate from the UI’s here, then we are seriously outnumbered: http://www.warcraftrealms.com/warhammer_census.php?serverid=11&factionid=-1&minlevel=1&maxlevel=40&servertypeid=-1&guildid=-1

I do believe the core of the data.  It would definately explain why IC is under attack quite literally every single night.  But back to the live event.  The T4 area where you have to do most of the Live event stuff is way closer to the order side than the dest side (yea, thats a fluke).  Combine that with the population difference and I had to be goblin sneaky to get my stuff done.

Wow, was that ever fun.  For the curent podcast I was able to get an interview with Carrie Gouskos.  She leads the strike team for User Interface and Tome of Knowledge.  She was a total blast to talk to, a lot of fun, and a total player.  After the hair question I didn’t have any fear of asking anything.  I know that the hair question seemed weird, but a lot of women I know have serious hang ups about their hair and a few I know wouldnt have done it for 10,000 much less 1,000.

Anyway, since I still cant embed the player in the blog, the link for the show is here.

Where have I been April 10, 2009

Man, its been a while since I have posted a new blog.

I have had a bit of an issue with the game.  I am not going to /emoquit any time soon, but I am in the camp that is fed up with Rain of Fire for the Bright Wizard.  There is a video floating around that shows 2 BW holding off half a WB with the RoF in a contained area.  I personally have seen a group of 5 BW hold off 2 warbands past the 1st gate of a Fortress siege.  There is nothing that can be done.  As such, Order has completely overrun Iron Rock server that I play on.  Seriously.  They have hit IC every single night for almost 3 weeks now.

So I am reduced to trying to fit a Bile run in before the city gets locked down and slow grinding my alts.  Right now my Shaman Shazzbot (nanu nanu) is just into Tier 3 and I am pure orvr on him.  Down side is I am broke as a joke.  I think I have 1 gold on him (got about 125 on my main).  On the upside I have kick ass inf gear from T2 that I can still use.

My Choppa Garzak just got into T2, and I need to get a couple of levels under him before I orvr, so I don’t waste rr xp.  Playing a choppa is fun, and its shocking how much damage I can do.

Also I have started making some How-To videos.  Probably the most overlooked part of the game is the Tome Tactics.  The career tactics are for the number crunchers.  RR tactics are either broken or flat out don’t even work.  But Tome Tactics are there for PvE.  The first is getting Boon Tactics.  They are for order races (elves/dwarves/humans) which reduces agro range and 10% AP reduction.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5QgioBB-8A

I will have tactics out for the 1st and 2nd Benediction tactics for the upcomming Tomb Kings live event.  1st tactic gives +5% damage and 2nd gives that plus -5% damage taken.  Very useful for a tank.

1.2 Goodness March 11, 2009

So, the 1.2 update has been out for a while, and I wanted to get into the game core before I posted my thoughts on it.

Outside of my fanboy nerdness for Warhammer and WFB game in general, the thing that impresses me most about Mythic and the game is that there is always improvement.  It never feels like the game is worse after an update.

Anyway, improvements to the Black Orc Class:

1. Da Biggest.  You used to have to use a tactic to get the bonus to add to party members.  Now its part of the passive buff itself.  Thats a huge difference.  Almost all the tactics for Black Orcs have one use or another, but since you are limited to 4 tactics at one time I almost never used it because other tactics took priority.  Now when I am MT or OT and I do an AoE attack against large number of weak enemies, I can really buff the snot out of party members.

2. Trophies fixed.  A lot of the gear had problems with trophies.  They would show on the armor piece, but in the character screeen they had an ‘X’ on them and you couldnt move them around.  Plus the trophy would pixile in and out.  These issues are now taken care of.

3. Armor Painting.  This was always one of the thinks that worked the least and I wanted to work the most.  The whole concept of guilds and clans being able to have a unified look despite whatever armor was worn was one of the thinks I thought was the best idea.  But for the longest time a good number of armor pieces didn’t allow to be dyed or only part of the armor could be dyed.

And now for a taste of things to come….. February 19, 2009

<enter cheesy Mortal Kombat Music>

Or not.  I finally got a sample of what the game has braggin on for years and I had been hoping for since launch.  I log in sunday night and get a call for Keep defense in TM.  So quick as wyvern I zip to the castle and see that 1 castle is under attack, and order is on the 2nd door.  Great, another roll.  But wait……but wait.

I manage to sneak in the postern and we are all waiting on the 2nd floor for the battle to start.  I quickly grab the new “kill 20 enemy” quest from the keep lord, not expecting to finish it but what the hell.  What I got was the biggest shock and most fun I have had in game since the start.  Wave after wave after wave of order tried to push through the line.

Heals were up and they were good, rezzes were plenty, and I managed to turn the quest in 5 times.  Eventually the rez sickness began to hamper the order and thats when we made our push.  We kicked them out and waited for the RR/Inf tick to move out.  And boy did it ever tick. 815 was the final number.  I am not quite sure what formula they use to determain defense inf, but we must have earned it.  Another couple of 100 ticks for the doors to close and we moved out.  We crushed the rest of the zone, flipped it, and then crushed the next zone.

Outside of the zone flippign (which is irrelevant since I never seem to be on when a keep assault is going), I finally got what was promised.  I got massive RvR battle.  I got that hour long attack against player that pitted strategy vs numbers.   Thats whats been missing from the game.  Thats what I have been craving.  And I hope I see it again soon.

Best run ever February 13, 2009

Some game days are good, some are really bad, and some just rock.  Tuesday was one of those days that totally rocked.

It started out with a massive RvR push.  I logged in around noon and Order had all 3 zones pushed ready for fortress attacking.  I zone into Black Craig and its close to a zone flip, but the warband had spent the last hour trying to flip the zone with no luck so we moved on Caledore and claimed all the BO’s and both keeps.  After we finished that someone said that Order had taken a BO back in BC and was going for the keep.

A quick sprint and a massive Defense and the WB had booted order out of the keep.  After the doors closed we went and retook the BO which was enough to trigger a Zone lock.  Its been a while since I had been involved in one of those.  We then pushed on to Thunder Mountain.  Some more order stomping and another zone flipped.  I got up halfway past lvl 41 RR.  Unfortunately the warband broke after the 2nd flip so I logged and got some lunch.

Got back in before I had to go to work for the Bloodlord Enclave run.  A quick game of rock paper pwnage with Barakus and my lovely helm drops.

eadplate

The stat change from the Annihilator is: +27 armor, +5 Str, +3 Tou, -16 WS, +12 WoundsBut the big difference is the combat bonus.  I lose the +2 on the disrupt, but I gain +3 reduction on critical hits.  As a tank thats huge.  Attacking there are only so many strikes you can do, but trying to tank multiple enemies not getting hit with a crit saves the healers effortand makes things better.  Plus I already had the boots, so that got me the 2nd set bonus.

So we were about to leave when the guild leader asked if anyone didn’t have the belt yet.  I didn’t and sure enough my belt dropped.

gutstrap

This was a tougher upgrade from the Wraith’s Gutstrap I got from Elfland RvR Influence reward, but not that tough.  The Stat difference is: +24 Str-1 Will, +18 Tou, -8 Wounds, -14 Init, -28 SR, -20 ER, -23 CR, -12 bonus melee dam.  On the surface thats a lot to give up, but the belt also gave me the 3rd set piece bonus.  So add in another +66 Str.

Gear check: Not worth it………yet February 6, 2009

So I just ticked RR 40 this week.  Always a big step.  It marks the end of the 1st half of the game like I mentioned in an eariler blog.  Now I am grinding out the 2nd half of the RR levels, I took a look ahead at the next gear piece and I must say I am underwealmed.  Here is what I am talking about.

gearcheck

The basic breakdown is:

Strength: -29, Wounds -16, Toughness: +4,  Weapon SKill +18, Armor +35, Parry +2%

Thats a joke.  Granted the extra parry is nice to have and the greater ward is necessary on some level, but outside of that this gear is worthless.  Plus it costs 10g to boot.  The armor bonus is irrelevant.  The one thing I cant figure out is why the “next step” better gear is so much more worse than the one.  As a tank losing Str and Wou for a piddly amount of Tou and a miniscule parry bonus is rediculous.

Hopefully this will change.  Right before I hit Tier 4 and started on my Annihilator set, the stats and set bonuses were better in the Devastator set but Mythic changed them.  Sooner or later the Conqueror set will be better.  But for now I am working on the Sentenal pieces

Well, it only took 3 months to get most of the technical issues fixed, so Chris and myself were finally able to get episode 3 in the bag.  I am still having issues with the audio quality and some software doesn’t want to obey.

Still, I wouldnt publish it if I wasn’t happy with what I am doing.  I doubt my podcast will ever be huge.  Chaos cast does a good show, and while it baffles me that WARP can be 19 episodes in and they still can’t do any sound effects, at least they can record on a regular basis.

For some reason, the embed code doesnt want to work on this page, even though it works on myspace blog.  Anyway, here is the gcast link

1 WTF and 1 good example. January 22, 2009

I had my first real WTF moment in the game today.  I had just flown into Dragon Wake and was making my way down the hill when I saw a lone swordmaster standing there just waiting to have a face to face with my choppa.  Well, one long protraced battle later I was looking at my respawn timer and I had to wonder what the hell happened.  I mean I have had 1 sided battles before, but that was usually against an Ironbreaker or kotBS (btw, I will forever write the name of the class with the only emphasis on BS because the entire class is broken BullS**T).  Was there some patch I missed where Swordmasters became sick and broken in order for them to fall in line with the rest of the Order classes.

So instead of paying the healer I took a few min and went back through my combat log.  What I saw nearly made me jump out of my skin.  Throughout the fight the SM had either: Parried, blocked, dodged, or absorbed for less than 10 damage( I am assuming through a pot)……….85 of my attacks.  I am dead serious.  Skull Thumper….blocked.  Right in the Jibblies….blocked.  T’ree hit combo……blocked blocked and parried.  Ok, now seriously, WTF was that about.  I did the math and as near as I can figure I had a less than 40% chance of actually hitting the SM for any real damage.  Now granted I don’t know the order character builds very well, but I have fought SM on a few occasions and have never faired as bad as that.  I checked his char on the realm war site, but nothing stood out.  Maybe it was just a bad numbers day for me.  I have them now and then.

Now on the truely broken side.  There is a great vid on Youtube.  It shows just how broken, wrong, and beyond broken the Fetch ability is.

I am posting the link because for some reason the embed never works when I try it.

Ok, I would call that run a solid 75% on the success meter.  1 boss down, everything pwned except for Barakas.  Damn that boss sucks.  Anyway, the wrap up.  Our party consisted of the following:

Burghur: 40/42  Chosen. 4 Annihilatir and 1 Conq piece MT

Gorebash (Waagh): 40/37 Black Orc. 5/5 Annihilator OT

Skarlix: 40/39 DPS Shaman.  5/5 Annihilator

Papagoo: 40/41 Squig Herder.  3/5 Annihilator, 2/5 Conq

Deva: 40/39 DoK 5/5 Annihilator

Saphra: 40/36 Sorcerer 3/5 Annihilator, 2/5 Devastator

Fairly good party makeup.  In a perfect world I would have rather had another squig herder or better yet a Zealot for 2nd healing.  Its not that DoK can’t heal, its just that with the damage output of Barakus, DoK is more for DPS than healing.  Saphra’s low ward count could be a hinderance, but as long as agro is managed then its all good.

Korthuk the Raging:

Fairly easy boss.  Pretty much tank and spank.  One of the champion adds runs and gets booze for the main boss.  Only wiped once, and that was cause the DoK was drawing too much agro.  Basic strat is have the MT go nuts on Korthuk, burn down the 2 champs, and make sure the healing keeps up.  Squig Herder and the DoK got the drops.  Magus belt dropped, but we don’t have one in the guild high enough to use it.

Barakus the Godslayer:

Man this guy sucks.  Bullshitty attacks, and its still bugged.  Attacks are random and are as follows:

Melee Attack – Physical damage that depends on how many wards you have.
Knockback – Knocks everyone in melee range back.
Knockdown – Knocks the target down.
Charge – Charges and attacks a random person.
Enfeeble – Increases all enemies damage taken by 400%.

Charge is no big deal, unless you don’t have 5 wards.  Saphra got charged a couple of times and the charge attack took about 75% health. Knockdown as well, as long as the MT doesn’t suck everything can be managed

Probably the hardest part of the of the boss is the fact that Knockback and Enfeeble are a combo attack.  Basically the MT and anyone near Barakus get punted, everyone gets enfeebled, and a random party member gets intant full agro and Barakus walks towards them to unlock their death.  If you get attacked then its lights out Irene.  When I got tagged and wasn’t able to run away fast enough I took 5200 damage twice.  None shall live.

The only way to really live is to have range up the staircase, and run when you are enfeebled.  The only problem is that Enfeeble lasts a long time.  Easily 10 seconds.  Also for some reason if the MT is targeted after the KB/EF combo, and Barakus looses LOS, he goes after someone else.  At least that’s a theory.  Twice I saw him go after our MT and quit after 2 seconds and go after someone else.  After Enfeeble wears off, MT or OT has to Taunt Barakus back to the center.  The issue becomes timing.  Taunt too earily and you are dead.  Taunt too late, or have the taunt fail, and whoever gets attacked by Barakus is a drain on the healer.

We wiped several times trying to get this boss.  I think the final count was Barakus 7, party 0.  Our best effort got him down to 25%.  The real problem was the DoK.  And not even a problem with gear.  Agro is critical in the fight, and Deva kept drawing agro.  When the 2nd healer is at 1/2 health 9 seconds into the fight, its not a good sign.  I don’t know what Deva was spec’ed at, but the DoK was taking too much damage and  dishing out too little healing.  So Skarlix couldn’t keep up.  Again, not a failing of Deva.  Now when the healing did come, it was pretty good.  In one fight I got 1200 heals twice in 3 seconds.  But I had gotten about a total of 9K in healing inbetween the 2 times I did get healed from the DoK.

As for the 3rd wing, its optional but worth doing.  There are some decent drops off the trash micro bosses.  You get some items that help with the fight with Barakus, but the are one shot items and if you use all 3 at once the boss resets.  Plus they don’t do that much.  They help, but they only last 30 seconds.

All in all it wasn’t a bad run.  I wish I had gotten some gear, but I can wish in one hand and shit in the other.  I will let you know which one fills up first.
